Narvik
Narvik is a city of the Comté of Nordland in Norway, chief town of the commune of the same name. Among the Norwegian cities in the north of the Polar circle Arctic, it is the third in importance. It counts approximately 20 000 inhabitants.
Geography
The commune of Narvik is definitely wider than the borders of the city itself. Among the villages which also form part of the commune, let us quote Bjerkvik, Beisfjord and Skjomen.
The oriental party of the city, at the Swedish border, is entirely in the mountains, the point highest reaching 1894 meters. The city in itself is located close to the most interior part of the Ofotfjord, but even there, the mountains which are thrown directly in the fjord reach 1500 meters. Forests less recover the lowest part of the mountain (than 500 meters), but on the highest parts, snow can remain the major part of the summer. Certain ski slopes alpine arrive almost inside the city itself.
Located at 220 kilometers in the North of the polar circle, it is one of the cities more in North of planet. The Gulf Stream gives him a climate much softer than with the same latitude on another continent. The annual average is of 3.7°C. The period of growth of the plants is 155 days.
Economy and communications

Narvik was founded in 1887 with an aim of being used as free port of ice all the year for the iron ores of Kiruna and Gällivare. It bore the name of Victoriahavn until in 1898. The railroad which connects it to Kiruna names Ofotbanen. There is on the other hand no railway connection with the remainder of the Norway, the Norwegian railroads not going more to North that Bodø.
