Nāropa was born in a royal family from the Bengal. It to him was given the name of Samantabhadra and was to become king. However, being more tilted towards the spiritual way and the intellectual studies, the eight years age, he asked to go to the Cachemire in order to receive a higher education. Three years later, it arrived over there and began its studies of art, science, grammar, rhetoric and logic with the most famous professor of the time.

After having supplemented its studies, it turned over to the house to discover that his/her parents had arranged his marriage with a named girl Brahmane Vimaladipi. The marriage lasted only eight years and was dissolved on the insistence of Nāropa. It turned over to the Cashmere where it was ordered monk and continued his studies.

At the twenty-eight years age, it came to live with Pullahari. It accepted very close from there additional lesson at the Buddhist university of Nālanda, where he became later abbot. One day, a Dakini appeared to him. She explained the importance of the practice of the meditation, suggesting to him seeking the Master Tilopa for instructions. Thus, Nāropa left to research its professor whom it met while travelling to the East. During its training with Tilopa, it was subjected to considerable tests. However, Naropa persevered and reached the control of the lesson which it accepted. Its disciple Tibetan, Marpa the translator, brought this lesson to Tibet and became the founding father of the line Kagyüpa. See Mahāssidha.
