Narn I Chîn Húrin

The Narn I Chîn Húrin ( History of the Children of Húrin ) is a text written by J.R.R. Tolkien. It takes seat in the fictitious universe of the Ground of the Medium.

History of the text

Tolkien never completed completely this text, and the existing parts were published in the unfinished Contes and legends under the title Narn I Hîn Húrin . The lapse of memory of the C is a leading decision made by Christopher Tolkien for reasons of pronunciation: he did not want that the English readers pronounce chîn “tchin” ( The Lost Road and other writings , p. 322). This account finds in Silmarillion in a shortened form: it forms chapter 21 of the Quenta Silmarillion . A full version of Narn, published by Christopher Tolkien, is planned for 2007.

Narn is supposed to be written by a human poet named Dírhaval. He tells the tragic history of Húrin and his children Túrin Turambar and Nienor, after Húrin was cursed by Morgoth. He is inspired much the tale by Kullervo, in the Kalevala; one finds in two works the short dialog of the hero with his sword before this one commits suicide.
