BAZ MORE ACTA AGINEM OSITVS E VOTO POSVI

Translation of Jacques Jarry: The intendant, following a wish, raised for Sabazius this image manufactured out of marble (Jarry J. (2007), ancient Inscription and Early middle ages of Poitou , ED. ADANE).

This mention of the Eastern god Sabazius, confused by syncretism sometimes with Bacchus and sometimes with Jupiter, is single in the department of Two-Sevres. Only the other testimony of an Eastern worship is toponymic. Marnes in the commune of Airvault (Two-Sevres) or the inscription madronas on a triens mérovingien of the 7th century attests the presence of a worship of the goddess mother.

Places and monuments

At the time of the excavation of the cemetery mérovingien, in the Seventy, cf Gallia , it was discovered a sarcophagus whose end presented an engraving representing a stag. This stone was employed again in the wall of the town hall where it is still visible today (on the right of the dustbin).
