Nanites

The nanites (female name) are tiny Robot S presented in certain work of Science-fiction. They are machines of a size about the nanometer (10^-9 m), capable of extraordinary performances.

Modern robotics took again the topic, finding it highly promising and creative in the exploration of the infinitely small and finding in this idea, the possibility of influencing larger scales. Thanks to the hyper miniaturization and the handling of microscopic robot-like components one builds a nanite with an aim of making it function with his similar, in network, supported by their vast number. Million nanites could, in theory, to rebuild living tissue unattainable, to interact in the repair of the shielding of military vehicles or space, to replace the immune system of an individual or to agglomerate in mass to build polymorphic objects.

Obviously these ideas are still of the science fiction and the development of the nanites remains to make, but the fields of exploitations of this technology are so vast and promising that all these hopes are allowed. Moreover, the programming of the artificial intelligence necessary to such machines is still in extreme cases of current knowledge.
