History of the birth of the town of Nangis

birth of Nangis

Of Gallic and the Romans

One meets traces of Gallic stations neither no vestige of the druidic religion on the territory of Nangis, neither even no currency, nor no remains which can be attached at that time. Under their domination, the Romans had to follow the attended road going along left bank of Yonne and the Seine, then went along Right Bank to take by storm mélodunum (Melun) and to subject Lutèce overflowed. To penetrate more in north and to gain the valleys of the Marne and Oise. Labiénus, lieutenant de César, made open, by its legions, a military main road through the high forest which recovered this immense region. This way crossed, on a bridge, the Seine with Jaulnes close to the Bray-on-Seine and moved in straight line on Meaux. With the Middle Ages, it took the name of Facing and was used as limit between the Mons one and the Brie Frenchwoman with the Brie Champagne. The populations of the area, little submitted, made dangerous the crossing of the forest. The Romans had to create the military station of Riboe (today Châteaubleau). In this true strengthened city, fed of water by lines of well, they established there a permanent garrison and a governor. Two strengthened stations were created more in the north, the Small one and the Largeone (today Orbies) which preserved its Roman name of origin and the form of plural. A farm dating from the end the Roman period was discovered during recent work.

Chastel… first seigniory of Nangis

Until the Middle Ages, the territory of the commune of Nangis was entirely covered with a dense forest. At this period, in order to allow the merchants of Paris to go to the large fairs of Brie and Champagne, with Provins or Troyes, one builds through the forest a road. For the safety of the travellers, a fortress was created to be used to them as refuge and to place a garrison. Such was the origin of Châtel, first seigniory created on the territory of Nangis. So that the fortress of Châtel can extend its action of protection, it was raised, on the roadside, on the right and on the left of the keep, the strengthened outposts: in direction of Layered branches “Small Bertauche” and for Paris “Large Bertauche”, then Bailly and Châteaufort (current village of Grandpuits). The lord of this stronghold took the name of Chastel and the inhabitants that of Chastel-lès-Nangis. the creation of the common neighbors

Around Chastel, monks clear the forest in order to create a priory then an abbey. Gradually on the cleared territories the villages will be built surrounding Nangis nowadays.

Nangis is born from the competition of Chastel and the Mound-Beauvoir With the clearing of his fields, the lord of Chastel lives to group safe from his keep an increasingly many population and a village was created in the plain between Chastel and the Largeone which took the name of Chastel-Lès-Nangis. A church was built near the castle. The proximity of the road of Paris, traversed continuously by bands of plunderers, obliged the creation of a new stronghold more in the south whose owner made raise an extremely important castle that it called Beauvoir La Motte because of its situation and its site, i.e.: small eminence and beautiful sight. The two rival villages attracted with them the population and, in this fight, Beauvoir La Motte was to take the top: the nomads put themselves under the protection of the castle most important and pertaining to a richer family. Then, the inhabitants of Chastel and the Beauvoir Mound approached and were established near the fortress, along the way of Melun. Another shift in population enlarges the village while being established in the east, on both sides road of Troyes. The men of Chastel brought with them the name of Nangis which the village carried that they forsook and this name prevailed on that of the Beauvoir mound found too long. Such was the origin of Nangis. When in Chastel, it became nothing any more but one small hamlet; the church and the castle fell under the storm from the revolution from 1789.

Nangis… which rightly?

Nangis could be of origin and Gallo-Roman formation. The first form seems to be Nangiacus, then Nangeium, Nangeis then Nangiis. Nangis appears officially in 1157 on a bubble of the pope Adrien IV. Another interpretation breaks up the name of Nangis into two Celtic substantives: Nan (river) and Gys (dwelling), which would give dwelling of the river. Nangis is sprinkled by no river of surface but in its basement a torrent with strong flow runs, and let us not forget that before station strengthened of Large-Bertauche a small brook protected. Third assumption: translation of Nangiacus in field of Nanguis, name which was perhaps that of the first owner of Chastel. Another assumption: part of the forest of Beaver bore, close to Chenoise, the name of forest of Hogis. Perhaps the part of forest occupying the territory of Chastel bore it the name of Nangis by opposition and to distinguish it from that of Hogis.

While the Prussians operate towards the Marne, the Russian and Austrian army, advancing behind the Seine, crosses this river with Montereau and in Bray then the body of the marshals Victor and Oudinot pushes back who had been withdrawn behind the Yerres river. Napoleon, who has just collapsed the Prussians with Montmirail, runs to the help of his lieutenants to reject the enemy beyond the Seine and to cut the bodies of troops which had ventured until Fontainebleau. The Gerard general surprises the enemy avant-garde which was established in Mormant, the hunting of this city the sword in the kidneys and rejects it on Nangis which is occupied by a Bavarian body. The combat continues in the vast plain between Mormant and Nangis, the always pushed back enemy is driven out of Nangis and is rejected on Montereau. Bavarian division Lamotte, joined between Valjouan and Villeneuve Border them by the troops of the Gerard general, is put in rout and is sabred. They are these precursory facts of the battle of Montereau that the history called the combat of Nangis on February 17th, 1814. The mill Cleaned Top (the Sand pit), located on the nipple which dominates Nangis is reversed by artillery. Napoleon stops with the Hut, with the entry of nangis. From there, it gives its orders to the troops which ravel in front of him, directing the body of Oudinot on Provins, that of Macdonald on Donnemarie and the Victor marshal on Montereau.
