Nandou (astronomy)

Nandou (Chinese: zh 斗宿, pinyin: dǒu xiù) is a lunar cabin of the Chinese Astronomie. Its star référente (i.e. that which delimits the left border of the cabin) is φ Sagittarii. The cabin occupies an approximate width of 26 degrees. The Astérisme associated with the cabin contains, in addition to this star, five other stars:

  • ζ Sagittarii,
  • τ Sagittarii,
  • σ Sagittarii,
  • φ Sagittarii,
  • λ Sagittarii,
  • μ Sagittarii.
This asterism corresponds to part of the “teapot” characteristic of the constellation of Sagittarius, the four first stars above corresponding to the handle of the teapot and λ Sagittarii at the top of the lid. Only μ Sagittarii does not form part of the teapot, of which the right part is not in Nandou.

The form of this asterism is not without pointing out the famous carriage of the Grande Ourse, also gathered under a asterism in Chinese astronomy, Beidou. The similarity of these two names is besides related to the similarity of their form. In addition to this fact, the exact composition of this asterism is not any doubt because of the many mentions of the dates on which Planet S of the Solar system were near this one.

In Chinese Astrology, this cabin is associated with the group of the black Tortue of north.
