Nanar

In the field Cinéma tographic, a nanar is a familiar term which indicates a Film so much badly carried out and ridiculous that it becomes about it involuntarily amusing and Comique.

Normally, the nanar term differs from the turnip by its aptitude to divert. The nanar amuses by its defects, while the turnip is simply bad and tedious (in reference to the insipid taste of the vegetable of the same name). The nanar term is however sometimes used wrongly to indicate films without interest. It makes then doubles use with the term of turnip to which it should be opposed.

Etymology

  • According to Bernard Pivot, the term nanar would be in fact derived from Navet , which would go back itself to before even the invention from the cinema: one used it at the 19th century in the living rooms to indicate table X of little value (the term employed today would be rather “a crust”) or literary works tedious. The term east is seemed it widespread in the Fifties starting from the cinemas of the Latin Quarter of Paris.

  • According to the Dictionary the Robert , the term nanar date well of the 19th century but spelled nanard then. It would not derive from Navet but from the old word of Argot panard meaning old man . A nanard is thus also in the beginning an old “crust” (an old person being sometimes called besides a “old croûton”), a work which one finds bad and laughable because it is obsolete. This last point is sometimes taken into account, of the dictionaries translating nanar by bad because obsolete (what is not always false besides…).

One can also employ the word nanar as adjectival in all that is funny because bad. For example, speech of a book nanar for a book which makes laugh because he is very badly written.

Another definition

In the jargon of the Secondhand trade the USSR and secondhand booksellers, the nanar indicates a book or a poor and unsaleable object.
