Nanaimo
Nanaimo is a Canadian municipality of the Colombia-British, located on the Vancouver Island. It is the second city in importance of the island (after Victoria) with a population of 78.000 inhabitants. She is 55 kilometers in the west of Vancouver and is separated from the latter by the Détroit of Georgia. Early in the years 1800, Nanaimo was a station of draft, until in 1849 the chief of the tribe of the Snuneymuxw informs the Compagnie of Hudson Bay of the presence of coal in the area. The company builds in 1853 a fort named Nanaimo Bastion , which exists still nowadays - the city became a mining city then. An explosion in the mines of Nanaimo in 1887 killed 148 minors and became the largest explosion of human origin until the explosion of Halifax.
Nanaimo is inter alia the residence of the singer Diana Krall.
Sport
During one season, the Islanders de Nanaimo of the Western Hockey League played Hockey in the Nanaimo city. They finished fifth of their division and did not qualify by for the eliminatory Séries.
