Naná Vasconcelos

Juvenal de Hollanda “Naná” Vasconcelos (born the August 2nd 1944 with Recife) is a percussionist of Jazz Brésil IEN.

Vasconcelos learned how to play of all the Brazilian percussions but specialized since the years 1960 in the Berimbau. It went to Rio de Janeiro where it played with the singer Milton Nascimento. It is there that Gato Barbieri discovered it in 1970 and engaged it in its orchestra. They played the Jazz festival of Montreux, New York City and undertook a round in Europe. then Vasconcelos remained with Paris, where it carried out its first album Africa Deus .

On its return to Brazil, it carries out the album Amazonas and begins its collaboration with Egberto Gismonti. In New York it founded with Don Cherry and Collin Walcott the group Codona . He also worked with the group of Pat Metheny like with Don Cherry, Trilok Gurtu, Jan Garbarek, Arild Andersen, Andy Sheppard, Jim Pepper, Jean-Marie Machado and Paul Simon.

In 1995 he was artistic director of the International festival of the percussionnists of Salvador de Bahia. In 2005 documentary a Vasconcelos, Dirtied, Consolmagno presents it with Antonello Salis and Peppe Consolmagno. Vasconcelos wrote musics for the choreographers Pina Bausch, Jonathan Lunn and John Neumeier.
