Namêche

Namêche (in Walloon Nametche ) is a section of the Belgian city of Andenne located in Walloon region in the Province of Namur.

It was a commune with whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1977.

Namêche has a long tradition career. The exploitation of the Calcareous stone and the Dolomie constitutes an old economic activity there. This exploitation explains the presence with Namêche of a great number of working stone houses dating from the 19th century, staged with cliffside and built in a typical style mosan and not stripped of interest. Some beautiful stone farms there are also found.

Of Neo-classic style , the church of Namêche, dedicated to Notre-Dame, shelters, in the chorus, a generally known Gisant of stone as being that of Sybille of Jerusalem (or Lusignan), sister of Baudouin IV, count of Namur and king of Jerusalem (1174). On this tomb stone, one can read the following inscription: “YCI PUTS BACK THE BONES OF SYBILLE OF LVSIGNANT QUEEN OF YERVSALEM DECEASED L YEAR 1187”. The current church was built in 1858, but certain elements of the tower date from the 16th century. The building was classified in 1990.

According to the legend, the foundation of the first church of Namêche is allotted to Saint Materne, a bishop of Trier or Cologne having lived at the 4th century of our era. It would be also at the origin of the churches of Walcourt, Dining, Hastière and Ciney, as well as Notre-Dame church of Namur.

In addition to the Notre-Dame church, let us announce the existence, in the district of Wood the Bishop, of another small stone vault of size, dedicated to Sainte Therese de Lisieux and going back to 1929, as well as various vaults and Potale S.
