Nakhon If Thammarat
is a city of the Southern area of the Thailand.
History
Historians think that the city originates in the kingdom of Tambralinga mentioned in Chinese sources. At the time of Sukhothai, the principality of Nakhon If Thammarat appears already in the list of vassal of this Thai kingdom.At the 16th century, the European merchants knew the city under the name of Ligor.
At the end of the 19th century, Nakhon If Thammarat is finally ly annexed by the kingdom of Siam, of which it becomes a monthon (district). With the abolition of the monthon in 1932, the city becomes simple provincial capital.
