History
Neolithic time remains the menhir of the Poitiers Old man out of yellowish sandstone on which at the time Gallic an inscription was traced. RATN BRIVATIOM FRONTV. TARBEISONIOS IEVRV Frontu, wire of Tarbeisu offered the ratis (ground rampart or lifting) of the inhabitants of Briva.Known for a very long time, it was mentioned for the first time at the 18th century by Dom Mazet of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Cyprien to Poitiers.
The local toponym of Raïtes, in the commune of Fressines in Two-Sevres, which still explained forever is perhaps to bring closer to this Gallic word ratis.
This word ratis constitutes the root of the German toponym of Ratisbon. One finds it in the ancient names of Strasbourg Argento-Rati, the Ratis Ile de Ré and with Rézé close to Nantes with the Rati-ate derivative.
The menhir was integrated in the urbanization of the places at the time Gallo-Roman, as show it the air photographs.
There was an important Gallo-Roman agglomeration located on an old way and built on the territory of the Pictons (See external bond). Included in Naintré, this city was called Old man-Poitiers and it is there that Pépin the Brief and Carloman shared the States of their father Charles Martel.
