Nahda

At the 19th century, the Nahda (النهضة) was a true Arab , at the same time policy, cultural and religious rebirth . Initially concentrated in Lebanon, this mobility moves then rather largely in Egypt.

The intellectuals open with the Western doctrines, while leaving to make their studies abroad for example. They start a reflection historico-sociological to give a progress report on the social situation and cultural of their company, to determine the causes of their delay compared to the Occident, and to find the solution of it. Nahda was initiated in particular by the families Maronites Al-Boustani (especially by Boutros Al-Boustani, founder of Al-Medrassa Al-watania , the National school, in 1863) and Al-Yaziji, importers of the European model of schooling.

The period of Nahda coincides with that of the Tanzimat in the Ottoman Empire, which takes part of the same preoccupation with an adaptation to modernity on a European model, including the promotion of the Démocratie and the Women's right and the equal treatment of the citizens whatever their religion.
