Nagios

NagiosTM (in the past called Netsaint) is an application allowing the monitoring system and network. It supervises the hosts and services which you specify, you alerting when the systems are badly and when they are better. It is a free software under license LPG.

It is a modular program which breaks up into three parts:

  1. the engine of the application which comes to schedule the tasks of supervision.
  2. the interface Web, which makes it possible to have an overall picture of the information system and possible anomalies.
  3. the Plugin S , a hundred mini programs which one can supplement according to our needs to supervise each service or available resource on the whole of the computers or elements networks of our IF.

Possibilities

  • To supervise services networks: (smtp, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, ICMP, SNMP, LDAP, etc)

  • To supervise the resources of the waiters (load of the Processor, occupation of the Hard drive, use of the paginated Memory) and this on the operating systems most widespread.
  • Interface with the protocol SNMP.
  • the remote supervision can use HS or a tunnel SSL.
  • the Plugin S are written in the Computer programming languages the most adapted to their task: scripts Shell (Bash, ksh, etc…), C++, Perl, Python, Ruby, C#, etc…
  • the checking of the services is done in parallel.
  • Possibility of defining a hierarchy in the network to be able to make the difference between a broken down waiter and a waiter injoignable.
  • the increase of alarms is entirely skeletal thanks to the use of plugins (alarm by Email, SMS, etc…).
  • Payment of alarms by the administrators.
  • Management of the climbings for alarms (a not discharged alarm is sent to a different group).
  • Limitation of the visibility, the users can have an access limited to some elements.
  • Capacity of management of the oscillations (many passages of a normal state in a state of error in a short time).
  • Each test returns a particular state:
# OK (all is well)
# WARNING (the threshold of alarm is exceeded)
# CRITICAL (the service has a problem)
# UNKNOWN (impossible to know the state of the service)
