Nadjaf

Nadjaf (نجف in Arab) is a town of Iraq of 585.600 inhabitants (population estimated in 2003) to approximately 160 km in the south of Baghdad. It is the capital of the province of Nadjaf.

The city is a high place of Shiite Islam and Shiite political power in Iraq centers it. It shelters in particular the Mausolée of Ali. Nadjaf is the 3rd Shiite saint place, behind Mecque, Médine and in front of Kerbala.
