Naarden

Naarden is a commune and a city Dutchwoman, located in the province of the Holland-Septentrional . Its population is of: 17040 inhabitants. The city is strengthened with walls and ditches; the totality of the fortifications, as well as the star form of the Bastion S.A. preserved very well.

History

The first certificate of Naarden dates from the reign of the Empereur Otton I {{er}} (936 - 968); the city is mentioned in the form Naruthi . Naarden probably received its Established among towards 1300 of the count Florent V; however, the city had been already seen granting the right to hold a Marché well before this date.

Naarden is not any more at the place of its origins. Water of the Zuiderzee becoming more and more ménaçantes for the small town, one decided to rebuild the city at a surer place after his complete destruction lasting the Guerre of the Hooks and the Cod. The place chosen for the rebuilding was located on a height between the Zuiderzee and the Marais which bordered the city in the south; moreover, strategic place insofar as one were to pass by joining there the cities of the Comté of Holland since the east of the Netherlands.

The current city was founded in 1350. The drawing of the streets initial of Naarden and its fortification doubles are well preserved, even if they underwent some modifications, destruction and rebuildings during the centuries.

December 1st, 1572, Naarden was invaded by the Spanish during the Guerre Eighty Year old. The inhabitants were massacred and the destroyed enclosing walls. It was clear that the city was to be provided with a better defense. The new fortifications were carried out under the supervision of the military architect and urbanisate Adriaen Anthonisz, which also designed the fortification of Muiden, not far from there.

In 1672, the French took possession of the town of Naarden and continued work of fortifications, neglected during the previous century. They added Ravelin S and strong a Palissade, but could not prevent the catch of the city in 1673, by the Stathouder Guillaume III. Until 1685, work of improvement and perfection of the fortifications continued, amongst other things under the auspices of Adriaan Dortsman, Nicolaas Witsen and Willem Paen. Naarden then formed part of the Line of defense of Holland.

Last work took place at the end of the 19th century, after the Franco-German Guerre of 1870. In 1926, Naarden lost officially its function of strengthened city. An important restoration campaign took place between 1964 and 1987.
