Naïm Khader

Naïm Khader , born with Zababdeh, close to Jenin, on December 30th 1939 and assassinated with Brussels in 1981, is a Palestinian intellectual Christian, first representative of PLO near the Belgian authorities and European.

It arrives in Belgium where it joined his brother Bichara Khader in 1966 to carry out a doctorate in right there, then in international law with UCL. In 1968, following the occupation of the Palestine by Israel, it adheres to the Fatah and quickly becomes semi-official representative of the PLO, this function is recognized officially by Belgium in 1976.

It takes part in many diplomatic missions within the Euro-Arab Dialog, near the the United Nations, of the non-aligned countries, and especially of the Commission and the the European Parliament where it binds many contacts.

Partisan of the creation of a laic and democratic Palestinian State cohabiting peacefully with Israel, it militates for peace and the dialog. He ties friendly relations with members of the Jewish community of Belgium. He is one of the craftsmen of the recognition of the Palestinian cause in Europe. In 1976, it takes part in the creation of the Belgo-Palestinian Association with amongst other things, Marcel Liebman and Pierre Galand.

June 1st 1981, it is assassinated by balls in street, in front of its residence of Ixelles.

In spite of the strong emotion caused by this crime in Belgium and in the world, the judicial enquiry forever allowed to designate the silent partners of the attack. Charges one uttered either towards the Israeli secret services, or towards Palestinian extremists groups. The lawsuit of a supposed killer, in March 1999, was concluded on a withdrawal of case.

The Fondation Naïm Khader is created after its death, it will integrate later a few years Association belgo-palestinienne/Naïm Khader.

Various homages were organized in Belgium by the associative and political mediums Belgian in 2001 and 2006 at the time of 20th and 25e birthdays of its assassination. In 2003, the commune of Ixelles was twinned with the municipality of Zababdeh, birthplace of Naïm Khader.
