NR (video game)

NR is a Video game in Gratuiciel developed by Metanet Software and inspired by many plays of which Lode Runner of which it takes again the presentation and the general principle by adding more action and less reflection. It uses elements of the modern plays to knowing a Moteur realistic physique. In this universe of Science fiction, the player incarnates a Ninja and must cross the traps of NR, a system of formation.

Synopsis

The character, Ninja of profession, has a extraordinarily fast Métabolisme conferring a speed, a dexterity and a superhuman power to him. This natural specificity has however its consequence, it confers only one minute and half of life to him. Like a majority of ninjas, it has a thirst for challenges and richnesses. Gameplay

The Gameplay is that of a traditional Jeu of platform, i.e. a presentation in two dimensions making it possible to see the characters of profile, it does not have there a scrolling , a level is entirely visible with the screen. The objective of each level is the same one: to unbolt an exit door by activating a switch then to reach it and thus reach at the following level; certain levels have more than one exit and as many associated switches. The principal obstacle resides in the topology of the level which should be apprehended, and the presence of enemies who can only be avoided and whose movements must be anticipated.

To help it, the character lays out of an important jump, which can be carried out on the ground, or against a wall (as that is present in the video game Zool ) to be propelled gradually more and more high. He can also clutch himself with a wall to slow down his fall. Objects are present on the level such as switches at single use, some open others close hoppers; jumper , kind of springs which propel the character as one sees them in Sonic the Hedgehog ; and of the elastic blocks. These elements, according to their uses in the level, become obstacles or assistances.

The player can solve each of the 100 episodes present in version 1.4, some by resolving others. Each episode consists of five levels, numbered from 0 to 4, and the player has a time limited to achieve this series. Allocated time can be increased by recovering small pastilles Or on the way, remaining time at the end of the episode represents the score which the player obtained, the score of each level is calculated same manner.

Range over

The character can be killed various manners: by touching the ground with a too important speed to be bearable; electrocuted by a zap drone or a floor guard ; destroyed by a mine or a rocket launched by a fixed turret; killed by a turret armed with gaune, laser or traditional projectile; crushed by the closing of a door or the displacement of an element; while committing suicide (button K ); or by exceeding allocated time.

With each death, the player can start again the level immediately, allocated time re-initialized as it was it at the beginning of the level. When time remaining at the beginning of a level is insufficient so that it is possible to solve the level, the player must start again the whole of the episode.

Enemies

Several kinds of devices are intended to kill the ninja:
  • Of the fixed mines which explode in contact with an object;
  • Of the fixed turrets ( homing launchers ), which draw from the rockets with homing device;
  • Of the turrets gauss ( gause turrets ), which aim at the ninja then generate an instantaneous shooting in straight line. The reticle of aiming is visible and slow;
  • the Drone S with laser ( laser drones ) move and draw on the ninja if it is in their lines of sight. The flow of energy persists several seconds;
  • the drones zap ( zap drones ) managed an electric shock mortal, when they detect a ninja, they accelerate the movement.
  • the drones machine gunner ( chaingun drones ) draw from the gusts of balls in the direction of the ninja, if it is in their line of sight.
  • the floor guards (guards on the ground), remain on the ground, and move in direction of the ninja if they detect it.
  • the thwumps , in reference to Super Mario Bros. , of small blocks is suspended which fall brutally when the character passes in the vicinity. If the ninja is badly placed, it can be crushed or electrified, because a side sends discharges. Alternatives start on the side or upwards.

Highscore

The table of highscore contains the best scores carried out by the player in the various levels as well as the replay : the complete sequence of the part which it is possible to visualize. It is possible to transmit them on the official site of the play. The twenty best scores placed on line by the players of the whole world are also present. To click on any scores makes it possible to visualize the part of these players.

Developed with Macromedia Flash by Raigan Burns and Mare Sheppard, the first version of the play was published on March 1st, 2004. Michal Marcinkowski, creator of Soldier , provided additional sounds; certain levels of the official version (episodes 80 to 89) were carried out by users. The following versions especially corrected the errors and improved the jouability. They, for example, allowed the parameter setting of the keys, the addition of additional levels, or the improvement of the editor of level, which does not have an influence on the gameplay of the play.

Thus in version 1.4, a function was added to change the color of the character, but the gameplay slightly was also improved. The color of the character changes according to the advance of the player, the standard color and the black, and the change is carried out after having achieved a complete column of episodes, that is to say ten episodes. To each new complete column, independently of the order in which one carries them out, a new color is applied to the character. The gameplay was improved, for a question of simplicity, when time is past, the current level is started again as for a traditional death, whereas before version 1.4, the whole of the episode was started again, which resulted certain in committing suicide their character right before the end of time to avoid entirely starting again the episode.

Parallel to the development of the play, an editor of level, Ned, for NR editor , was designed and is available in the play by the means of the keys tilde (~) backslash (\) or the key star (*), according to the provision of keyboard.

Reactions

The video game was shown well by some sites, Home off the Underdogs places it in its list of better plays, Hundred allots a note 5 out of 5 and Gamehippo to him a note of 10 out of 10. Lastly, the play is gaining it 2005 of the Independent Games Festival in the category Audience Award , i.e. based on the votes on line of the public.

A community of player was formed around the play, in particular around the realization of the best scores and the creation of levels. According to a survey made on the Metanet forum, there are recorded surroundings 2500, the active members have between 10 and 20 years, and are originating in North America, Europe and Australia. Creations of level, there exists a traditional classification by difficulty or interest (action, reflection…) ; others create only artistic levels, which are not playable; others still create levels to be looked at, known under acronym DDA ( don' T C anything , does not do anything). The DDA use the principles of the plays in particular the forces like gravity or the drones and another mobile to create distracting chain reactions. In addition to the 500 official levels, site NUMA ( the NR To use Map Files , files levels of users) proposes 30000 of them. This file was integrated into the play, it is thus possible to subject a chart created or to exploit a level which there has just been placed by the means of the graphical interface from the play.

Certain originators of chart allow the edition of the levels “the hand”, with a text editor. It is then possible to make things which leave the ordinary one, such as for example creating a partly invisible drone, to force it to hold a fixed position, or to create téléporteurs.
