NOMAD (FAI)
NOMAD is a Fournisseur of access to Internet (FAI), République of Maurice.
History
NOMAD is a subsidiary company of Africa DIGITAL Bridges Networks Ltd (ADB), based with Dubai. Located at the cybercity, it started its activities as a start-up in December 2003 under the sign of Network Plus . At the beginning, the supplier was specialized in the access by Phone network commutated (STN or dial-up ) through prepaid cards. ADB is itself member of a conglomerate of six companies specialized in the Internet and oil.
Technology
NOMAD uses a domestic network based on technology WIMAX (Internet high banc without wire) to connect its subscribers to the Web. In November 2006, 60% of the territory Mauritian was covered by the network. The totality of the island will be covered in 2007.
Offers of NOMAD
NOMAD proposes three offers:

the access to the Internet without wire with 64 Kbps, 128 kbps and 512 kbps.
- the traditional dial-up by prepaid cards
- the lodging of Internet sites
Problems
The beginnings of the WIMAX in the island was not easier. The lack of antennas relay in certain served areas made that several subscribers complained about the bad quality of connection and its slowness, in the press writes local. The company ensures that all these problems are being solved with the installation of new antennas relay.
The company also placed an objection near the organization regulating of sector Internet in Maurice, ICTA ( Information and Communication Technologies Authority ), so that the request for Mauritius Telecom, historical FAI, to lower the cost of its fixed price ADSL basic, 128 kbps, with Rs 710 against Rs 950 currently. NOMAD markets the 64 kbps with Rs 550 per month. The advanced reason is that it invested large for the installation of a new technology and with need of time to make profitable this investment. Although the decision of the ICTA is made wait, the data-processing Technologie minister and of Telecommunications, to bring its supports at the request of NOMAD.
Telereality
NOMAD launched the first emission of telereality Mauritian, NOMAD No Limit Challenge , during the month of October 2006 and diffused on the first chain of national television, MBC. During six days, six candidates, selected through a casting, were locked up in a house. Their only bond with outside was the fixed network of Internet without wire. They thus had to raise of the challenges having a relationship with the Internet.
