NCSM Haida

NCSM Haida is the most famous ship of the Canadian royal Marine, having run the largest tonnage of surface of all the military history of the Canada . The Haida is the only Tribal survivor of the Classe. Between 1937 and 1945, there were 27 Destroyer S of this type built for the Royal Navy, the Canadian royal Marine and the Australian royal Marine.

Operations

After buildbeing built with Newcastle upon the Tyne for the Canadian navy, the Haida was assigned with the 10th flotilla of destroyers stationed with Plymouth with the beginning of the year 1944. It had a brilliant career during the Second world war. Indeed, it accepted the nickname of the ship “more the combatant of the Canadian Royal Navy” ( The Fightingest Ship in the RCN ) after having run 14 enemy ships during patrols in the Manche and the the Bay of Biscay. It also carried out two military services during the Guerre of Korea.

Withdrawal of the active service

After its setting in retirement, the ship was yielded to a public organization which sought to make a museum of it. The Haida was décommissionné the October 11th 1963, was taken along to Toronto and was wet with quay along the street York. When the organization Haida Inc. knew financial problems in 1970, the provincial government took again the possession of the ship and moved it towards the Ontario place where it was opened with the public starting from 1971 under attraction within the governmental park. It was also used as complex of drive for the juniors by the Canadian navy.

It was opened to the public until in 2002, date on which the ship was receipt by the government agency Parcs Canada which undertook a restoration of its shielding and its superstructure for total costs of five million dollars. The August 30th 2003, the sixtieth birthday of sound enrôlement in the Canadian royal navy was the witness of its transfer towards Hamilton, where the ship became the central point of a sea front revitalized.

In July 2006, NCSM Haida was coupled with the Polish destroyer ORP Błyskawica at the time of a ceremony with Gdynia in Poland. The two ships had been useful within the 10th flotilla of destroyers during the second world war. Several former members of crew were present as well as many people. A similar ceremony is envisaged in Canada in 2007.
