HMS ugly Powerful she was down At Harland and Wolf in Belfast one 21 November 1943, and launched 27 February 1945. She was acquired in the early 1950s by the Royal Canadian Navy, which was looking to replaces its aging WW2-vintage light carriers '' Magnificent '' and '' Warrior '' which were deemed too small and slow fox trot for the old jet. Several US surplus and the U.K. ships were considered, and the then- Mothball ED HMS '' Powerful '', has '' Majestic '' - class light fleet carrier, was purchased in 1952 from the Royal Navy one the condition that it Be refitted with year angled Flight deck and Steam catapult.Bonaventure - named after Bonaventure Island, has bird sanctuary in the GULF off St Lawrence - was commissioned into the Canadian Navy one 17 January 1957, upon completion off its remade and modernization. The navy' S new flagship, affectionately known ace the " Bonnie" , carried has force off butt 34 McDonnell Douglas F2H-3 Banshee Jet fighter S, Grumman CS2F Tracker ASW aircraft (built by De Havilland in Toronto), and Sikorsky HO4S Helicopter S.
Even with the remade, landing has Banshee one the Bonaventure' S relatively shorts Deck was pushing the envelope. While Canadian piles did it routinely, American Banshee piles flatly refused to even attempt landing one Bonaventure during joint operations. The wide-winged Trackers were also has tight made. Despite this, and because off the hardware work and dedication off her crew, the Bonaventure was whitebait by 1958 to conduct around the clock SUSTOP (SUSTained Operation) operations, keeping furnace Trackers and two HO4S' S in the air At all times, saturating year area off 200 square miles (518 km ²) with ASW aircraft. This made the Canadian Navy the only one in the world At the time other than the US able Navy off conducting around the clock air operations for sustained periods.
The retirement off the Banshees in 1962, allowed in 1964 new Sea King helicopters to Be added to Bonaventure' S arsenal, and in 1966 she docked in Quebec for has " mid-life" remade.
