He is the oldest son of Pontos (the Flood) and of Gaïa (Earth), the husband of the Océanide Doris and the father of the fifty Néréides. He resides in water of the Aegean Sea.
Hésiode, which gives birth to it from Pontos without any female contest, and Pindare celebrates its benevolent justice. It has a great wisdom and the gift of prophecy. Like many marine divinities, it can change by taking various forms.
