Néodamodes
The néodamodes (in Greek old νεοδαμώδεις / neodamốdeis ) is Hilotes freed following their service like Hoplite S in the army lacédémonienne.
The date of their appearance is discussed. Thucydide does not explain the origin of this special category. Jean Ducat, in his reference book, Hilotes (1990), thinks that the statute “was largely inspired by measurements which the circumstances had dictated concerning Brasidiens”, i.e. Hilotes freed following their participation in forwarding from Brasidas (424).
Their existence is attested of 420 with 369. They form integral part of the civic army and 2000 of them take part, for example, in the countryside of Agésilas II in Ionie, of 396 with 394.
Their name comes from νέος / neos , “new” and of δῆμος / dêmos , “dème, territory”. As opposed to what pays Hésychios of Alexandria, which brings closer the néodamodes to the Démote S (citizens inhabitants of a Dème) Athenian, they do not acquire a full citizenship. The suffix - ωδης ( - odes ) mark only one resemblance. Indeed, the joined dème is only that of the Périèque S.
