Myth founder of Marseilles

Here the legend of the foundation of the town of Marseilles which mixes the historical facts and the imaginary popular one.

At sixth century BC, the phocéen S Simos and Protis sought sites likely to become “ emporia ” or Comptoir S and thus to make trade. Into sailing by coastal traffic, they would have discovered bay of the Lacydon (current the Old man-Port).

The first contacts with the Indigenous S, the Ligure S were very successful: a delegation led by Protis met the ligure prince Nannus at the time when this last was to marry his/her daughter Gyptis. According to the Gallic tradition, this one was to present a cut to its elected official, the Coupe of hyménée. With the sight of Protis which was to be young and distinguished, it was struck and decided for the phocéen. Phocéens created the foundations of a city which it called Massalia (or Massilia), in 599 av. J. - C..

Thus, Marseilles was created, around a cut.
