Mysteries of Udolphe

the Mysteries of Udolphe ( of The Mysteries off Udolpho ) is a Romance of the British Ann Radcliffe published in 1794 and one of the most famous black novels of the 18th century. Its books are then very popular in the aristocracy and the rising middle-class, particularly near the young women like Catherine in Northanger Abbey of Jane Austen. Romantic English, and Victoriens, dedicated a worship to him. In France, Balzac, Hugo, Nodier, Féval, Known, remembered it.

Summary

Put in 1584 in the south of France and the north of Italy, the novel concentrates on the fate of Emily St Aubert, a French young woman become orphan after the death of his/her father. Emily is imprisoned in the Udolpho castle with the hands of Signor Montoni, an Italian brigand, who married his aunt and tutor Mrs Cheron. Emily in love with Valancourt, the young brother of the count Duvarney, is frustrated by Montoni. Emily also endeavors to discover an explanation of the mysterious relation between his/her father and the Marchioness of Villeroi, a mystery which seems to have connections to the Udolpho castle.

The Mysteries of Udolphe, tells the history of Emily St Aubert, the only child of an rural family whose fortune declines. Emily and its father share a close link, because of their love of nature. After the death of his/her mother of a grave disease, Emily and its father approach still more. It accompanies it at the time of a voyage in Switzerland, where they meet beautiful Valancourt. Emily and Valancourt quickly will fall in love.

The father of Emily father succumbs to a long illness. Emily, now orphan, is sent near his/her aunt, Mrs Cheron (later known under the name of Mrs Montoni), who divides any of her interests and little affection shows him. Mrs Cheron is married in Montoni, the malicious one of the history. Montoni brings Mrs Montoni and Emily to Udolpho (Emily thus will separate from its Valancourt applicant), where Montoni threatens Madam in order to force it to sign on its properties in Toulouse, which after its death, otherwise, will return in Emily. Alarming events occur in the castle but in the final analysis, Emily takes the control of its goods and finds Valancourt.

Characters

  • Emily St Aubert: Emily is the protagonist of the novel and the action proceeds from its point of view. She is exceptionally beautiful and soft. As for its character, it is firm, sensitive and autonomous.
  • St Aubert: The father, dies at the beginning of the novel. He warns Emily on his bed of died not to become a victim of his feelings, but to acquire the control of his emotions. Its relations with the unexplainable marchioness of Villeroi is one of the mysteries of this account.
  • Valancourt: The younger brother of the count Duvarney, Valancourt travels with Emilly and his father through the Pyrenees. He is one fringant young man with a noble character. Saint Aubert estimates that Valancourt corresponds to Emily but it misses richnesses.
  • Mrs Cheron: Sister of Aubert saint and aunt d' Emily. Mrs Cheron is an egoist, rich widowed living on her field close to Toulouse where Emily places after the death of St Aubert.
  • Montoni: Haughty and plotter, Montoni is the malicious Gothic prototype. He disguises himself as noble Italian to gain the hand of Mrs Cheron then imprisons Emily and Mrs Cheron in Udolphe in an attempt to acquire control on the fortune of Mrs Cheron.
  • Count Morano : Chef Morano is introduced to Emily by Montoni to marry.
  • Annette: A chambermaid which accompanied Mrs Cheron by France, Annette is inclined with the exaggeration and of the superstition but is faithful and honest.
  • Ludovico: Ludovico is one of the servants of Montoni. It falls in love with Annette and provides an assistance to Emily.
  • Cavigni: Riding and friend of Montoni.
  • Orsino: Riding and friend of Montoni which is forced to hide after having made a murder.
  • Verezzi: Riding which accompanies Montoni with Udolpho.

The Mysteries of Udolphe is alarming. The apparently supernatural events are in the final analysis explained “rationally” by Radcliffe, the novel one of works was parodied in Northanger Abbey. Although Austen is recognized for its mockeries, the Mysteries of Udolphe popular in its time and was rented by personalities such as Sir Walter Scott, author of Waverley Novels.
