Synopsis

Twenty years after being adopted by a Swiss family, Depierrat, Vinh will marry Sarah in the intimacy to prevent that his/her adoptive parents Claire and Michel do not recross themselves, the family having burst for ten years.

However, the mother Vietnamese of Vinh will come during three days to attend the marriage of her son whom she had decided to let leave on a boat Boat people whereas it was seven years old. As Depierrat and even Vinh at the time of a voyage to the country never acknowledged to him that there was a divorce, Jacques the son insists that all play the comedy of the plain and catholic family to give pleasure with this lady and Vinh.

The film is devoted to the adventures of the difficult preparation of these three days and of the day of the marriage during which the old Claire-Michel couple has evil to be re-examined and which them Catherine girl still does not manage to dialog with her parents. Worse, progressively, the former owner mono-maniac of his company Michel and Claire end up showing Jacques to try to join together the family against their liking.

Comments

My brother Marie is the first film of fiction of the Swiss documentarist Jean-Stephan Bron. However, several aspects recall that the scenario writer and realizer of film come from the world of the documentary one: the intrigue is related to two personal histories: that of Bron whose family adopted a Vietnamese child and that of the actor Quoc Dung Nguyen who knew the same tour as Vinh. Bron chose this actor for this reason.

Then, the character of Jacques personifies Bron: obviously some time after this marriage, Jacques films the members of his family to receive their testimony on the adoption of Vinh and the marriage. The Possessive adjective of the title indicates that he is the narrator of the history. In full marriage for example, it is not Vinh and his/her mother less seems to matter that Jacques who becomes the center of the family crisis since his/her parents reproach him for having thus joined together them and Michel keep resentment to him not to have been able to play his part of father to the marriage of his son.

To bring the discovery of the deep tear of this family, first half of film presents features of humor: for example, the table of the meal of family assembled in the course of the day is wobbly and the German-speaking uncle is played by a Vietnamese comic actor.
