Mutzig

Mutzig is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace. Although written sometimes with U dieresis (U, equivalent of U French), Mützig, good Alsatian knowing the city will pronounce Moutzig.

Geography

Mutzig is located at the entry of the valley of the Bruche in edge of the Trunk road 420 which connects Molsheim to St-Dié. Its communes bordering are Molsheim, Dorlisheim, Rosenwiller, Gresswiller, Dinsheim-on-Beetle, Dangolsheim and Soultz-the-Baths.

History

The brewery of Mutzig was creates in 1810 per Antoine Wagner. It amalgamated in 1969 with other breweries of the area to create the Albra (Alsatian of brewery) which was bought by the company Heineken in 1972. The group closed the production site local in 1989, but continuous to produce under the mark Mützig a Bière which is brewed in the factory of Schiltigheim.

The Fort of Mutzig Extremely of Mutzig " Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II"

  • German Fortifications, contruites at the end of the 19th century (1893-1916) by the emperor Guillaume II, known as Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II . Larger German fortification of the time, the Feste barred the plain of Alsace with a minimum of troops (6 to 8000 men) against a French northern southern offensive in order to pemettre the German offensive by Belgium (Schlieffen plan). First fortification built in Germany after the crisis of the shell with brisance, it will be used as prototype with a new concept: the burst fortification or groups strengthened called it Feste. Novel methods will be inaugurated: concrete, armouring and the electric current. Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II is vastest and the most powerful fortification in 1914 in Europe. The Strong one draws on August 18th, 1914 in direction from the Valley of the Beetle, it blocks the French troops and makes it possible the German troops to take again the valley of the Beetle.

Patronym

Mutzig family name is not very current and historically related to the area of Mutzig. The complete genealogy goes up in 1660 (Wendling Mutzig de Balbronn), but of many hard copies go up with a line of minor nobility (Mutziche) juqu' at the beginning of the 12th century… Unfortunately much of documents were destroyed in the fire of the court of Strasbourg during the war of 1870-71, making extremely difficult the reconstitution of the history…
