Muttahida Qaumi Movement

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM, plain National front), until July 26th, 1997 Mohajir Quami Movement (National movement of the immigrants), is a Pakistani political party. It is about a ethnic Political party aiming at representing the population to mohajir (immigrant) urban of language Ourdou (several million Moslems) which had taken refuge with the Pakistan coming from the India after the partition of 1947. The MQM defends the rights of Mohajirs to Pakistan, aims improving their socio-economic statute and at ensuring more capacity to them on the political plan. He is opposed to the fundamentalist Moslems frontally and its leader, Altaf Hussain, are the permanent target of attack of their share.

With the legislative elections of the October 20th 2002, the MQM collected 3,1% and 13 seats out of 272 with the National Assembly (which counts in all 342 seats, including 60 reserved for the women and 10 for the religious minorities). To the local elections of August 2005 (second round on August 25th), the MQM presented lists under the denomination Haq Parast Group because the parties are officially banished for this type of election. It had already obtained seats in the past with legislative elections under this name.
