Mutiny of Bishopsgate

The Mutiny of Bishopsgate (English: Bishopsgate mutiny ) took place in April 1649 when the soldiers of the colonel Edward Whalley of the New Model Army refuse to obey the order to leave London.

Unfolding

In January 1649, Charles Ier of England is considered and carried out for high treason against its people. In February, the officers seniors of the army, the Grandees , the petitions soldiers with the Parlement banish. In March, eight levelling soldiers require the return of the right to petition with Thomas Fairfax and five of them are returned army.

During this time, 300 men of Infanterie of the colonel John Hewson having declared that they would not be useful in Ireland as long as the program of the Niveleurs would not have been adopted are returned army without receiving their arriérages of pay. A soldier supporting the levellers, Robert Lockier, is carried out on April 27th, opposite the Cathédrale St Paul. Its funeral is the occasion of demonstrations of the levellers.
