Edward Mutesa II (November 19th 1924 - November 21st 1969) was a king of the Bouganda and first president of the Uganda of 1962 with 1966.
Its complete name was Sir Edward Frederick William David Walugembe Mutebi Luwangula Mutesa but was often called King Freddie by its supporters. As king, he was also the chief of the tribe Ganda which domininait the Bouganda.
Mutesa became king in 1939 after the death of his/her father, the king Daudi-Ghwa II. It was then student in England, with the Université of Cambridge, (Magdalene College). At that time, Bouganda was part of the British Protectorat on the Uganda. It continued the policy of reform of the kingdom, started by his father, kingdom very largely autonomous, towards a Constitutional monarchy. When the discussions started within the British authorities to make of Uganda an independent state, king Freddie intervened to try to ensure the independence of Bouganda with respect to Uganda. These efforts were vain and badly perceived and it even briefly was deposited and exiled.
Mutesa turned over to Uganda and taken again its throne in 1955. In 1962 Uganda became independent with Milton Obote like Prime Minister and Walter Coutts like General governor. In 1963, Obote abolishes the statute of Uganda like Royaume of the Commonwealth and replaced the general governor position by that of an honorary president. An election, largely faked, saw Mutesa elected like first president of Uganda, a result that Obote had deliberately orchestrated to alleviate the Ganda tribe.
Mutesa was not satisfied by being useful like simple figurehead and it kept a resentment against Milton Obote on the future of Bouganda. In 1966, it requires a parliamentary inquiry into a smuggling of gold and ivory of the close Congo in which Obote and its chief of staff Idi Amin Dada would be implied. This same Obote year suspended the Ugandan constitution and proclaimed itself new president, exiling Mutesa in Great Britain. President Obote then abolishes all the kingdoms of Uganda, including the Bouganda.
