Mutare (Umtali)
Mutare (old Umtali at the time of the Southern Rhodesia) is a Ville is Zimbabwe located in the province of Manicaland. Fourth plus big city of Zimbabwe, Mutare counts 190 thousand inhabitants. In 1982, after the independence of the Zimbabwe, the town of Umtali had taken the name of Mutare.
Mutare means " part of métal".
Geography
The city was founded to 8 km of the border of the Mozambique and to 290 km of the port of Beira making of Mutare the Zimbabwean main door towards the sea.
Mutare is located at the north of the chain of the mountains of Bvumba and at the south of the valley of Imbeza.
History
The city was built on the site formerly kraal of the Mutare chief. In 1890, A.R. Coquhoun had obtained the concession of the zone and Fort Umtali was thus founded at the edge of the rivers Tsambe and Mutare.
In 1891, Fort Umtali was moved of 14km. In 1896, the construction of the railroad between Beira and Bulawayo have for consequence to move ue third time the site of Strong Umtali on its current site to be with closest to the railway line.
In 1914, Fort Umtali becomes a city and in 1971 it took the statute of municipality.
In 1982, it was débaptisée to take the name of Mutare.
Population and economy
The population is mainly of the Ethnie Shona. In 1982, Mutare counted 70 thousand inhabitants.The economy rests on lemon, the mines and agriculture.
Two of the largest producers of foods of the country have their general headquarter with Mutare.
The city suffers from the Pandémie of the Sida and considerably increased poverty since the land reforms of Robert Mugabe with the beginning of the year 2000.
