Musk ox
The musk ox , or ovibos , is a Bovidé covered with a thick fleece laineuse.
Phylogeny
In spite of its Bovine aspect of (which is worth its name in several languages to him), it is in fact a aberrant Caprin, near to the primitive stocks (Takin S, Tahr S, Serow S…) Asia tropical and subtropical and Goat of the Rocky Mountains of the Western American, but adapted to the Arctic climate!
Distribution
He lives extreme American north and the Greenland. Of eurasiatic origin, it colonized the average latitudes of the Northern hemisphere during the Glaciation S of the Holocène, before being folded up towards the Arctique at the end of the Würm. It died out besides in the Old world approximately 2000 years ago, following the warming of the climate.
Near to the extinction in the middle of the 20th century because of the Hunting, its manpower increased since (approx. 75000 animals in 1999), and it was reintroduced in several countries (Scandinavia, Arctique Russian, etc…).
Ovibos moschatus is only the species kind Ovibos .
