Musical work

Contrary to the others works of art, a musical work progressively builds its unfolding in the Temps. Listening - at the higher level of the Perception of the music - plays a prevalent part in the structuring of the work, and makes it possible to include/understand how it “ functions ” for each individual, how it creates a process (continuation of states or phases) of a particular type. The gasoline of the musical resides less in what is perceived than in what is made of this perceived. It is thus duty of the Compositeur to allot a musical functionality by destination to sound objects which are only one disparate material.

  • musical work is thus the project of a musical Composition particular. The concept can extend to that from impromptu music, and with that of music of oral transmission where, there still, the interpret-type-setter creates his own architectures, leads the form of his work and plays with our direction of the auditive perception. Musical work supposes then the existence of a marking system unspecified, likely to generate a partition, the latter allowing the transmission and the reproduction of musical work.

  • the concept of musical work is a singularity of the Western erudite music, whose marking system, elaborate during second half of the Moyen-âge, is called Solfège.

a Western musician absorptive by the reading of a partition, is undoubtedly a rather enigmatic phenomenon for another musician practitioner a music of oral transmission. For the latter, indeed, the only thing to be respected and transmit in the musical field, they are the traditional uses (for example, the rhythmic scales, modes, etc). Moreover, a music carried out in determined circumstances, has only one transitory value and does not have consequently to be preserved to be rejouée, such as it is, in other circumstances. For this type of musician, therefore, the concepts of partition and work are not relevant.

  • the existence of work implies a specialization which divides the Musicien S into two classes: on a side, creators, called Type-setter S, other, executants, called interpreters.

  • At the 20th century, systems of sound reproduction (long-playing records, magnetic bands, compact disks, electronic files…) allow to record a given musical realization. This faithful sound photography enters in competition with the partition of music which inevitably moves back, without however disappearing completely. It is thus advisable from now on to widen the concept of musical work to the various types of musical recordings (analogical or numerical), in which the noted music is often competed with by the impromptu music. The Album of music for example, must be arranged side of musical works whatever its support (disc, band, etc).

  • On Wikipédia, musical works are indexed starting from the Type music or kind to which they are attached.
