Musical director
The title of musical director ( music director in English) is used per many symphony orchestras to indicate the Leader which directs the formation for the majority in the concerts and which has a role of decision and more or less important control on the orchestra (choice of the works exploited, the recordings, the places of rounds, many repetitions of works, right to watch the engagement of the instrumentalists, choice of the concert performers or other invited leaders…). It is engaged, most of the time, for one period of several years and, sometimes, is elected by the titular musicians of the orchestra.
In certain orchestras, it is sometimes called “principal leader” or “permanent leader”. He is opposed to the “leader invited” which is engaged to him by the orchestra for one short period (some repetitions followed by some concerts) and which limits a strict activity of Leader.
