The Musical Box is a song of the group of progressive Rock Genesis. It is reproduced on the album Nursery Cryme (1971). This part of more than ten minutes was played at the time of all the rounds between 1971 and 1975, and still systematically in the years 1980 and 1990.
The part tells the history of Henry Hamilton-Smythe minor (8 years) and of Cynthia Jane Of Blaise-William (9 years). They play both with the Croquet. Inopportunely, Cynthia decapitates Henry with his mallet. Two weeks later, in the “nursery,” Cynthia discovers the invaluable musical box of Henry. It opens it and a melody is made hear. Henry had left, but not for a long time because, while it was held in the part, its body started to age quickly, leaving inside the spirit of a child . The desires of the life push Henry to persuade Cynthia to achieve its romantic desire. Unfortunately, the noise makes run the children's nurse. Instinctively, this last lance the musical box on the bearded child, destroying them all two.
This song became little by little the symbol of Genesis because it one of the first was composed by the group in its final composition (Phil Collins had joined Genesis only in 1971). At the time of the rounds according to the albums “Cryme Nursery” (1971) and “Foxtrot” (1972), for the end of the part, Peter Gabriel wore a red dress and a head of fox. At the time of the following rounds, it returned on scene in the skin “of Old Henry” with a mask of old man, being held curved and singing with a voice devastated by the age.
