Musica Antiqua Köln

Musica Antiqua Köln (Musica Antiqua Cologne or MAK) is a German unit specialized in the interpretation of the Baroque music of 1640 to 1760 on old instruments.

History

The unit is founded in 1973 by the Violoniste and Musicologue Reinhard Goebel with students of the Academy of Cologne. In 1978, the MAK occurs for the first time in formation of orchestra, then the general public discovers the whole in 1979 at the time of concerts to the Queen Elizabeth Hall with London and to the Holland Festival . Since 1978, the unit has an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft.

The unit played on splendid old instruments, like violins baroques of Jakobus Stainer and of the Rogeri family, but also of the counterparts of high-quality, manufactured by contemporary violin makers like Roger Hargrave.

The unit is dissolved today. In November 2006, following health issues, Goebel announced the end of its activity. It will be devoted from now on to the direction of orchestra.

Discography

The recordings were numerous, but also the distinctions. Several Grands Prix of the Disc, Grammophone Award, the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik , Echo Klassik and the Price Caecilia and Record Academy Award in Japan. Among the best recordings, one can quote the Brandenburger Concertos of Jean-Sebastien Bach and the Music of Table of Georg Philipp Telemann.
