Music celebrates

The Fête of the Music takes place throughout the world the June 21st (which generally coincides with the first day of the summer). She saw the day for the first time at Metz-Magny (57) place of the church and was then popularized in whole France.

She is initially imagined in 1976 by the American musician Joel Cohen which worked then for Radio France -- France Musique. Cohen proposed for this chain of the " Saturnales of Musique" for on June 21st and on December 21st. He wanted that the groups of musics play on June 21st at the evening, day of the summer. After the elections of 1981 this idea was adapted by Maurice Fleuret and was installation by Jack Lang then Minister for the French culture. Its first edition with its new name takes place on June 21st 1982. It is the occasion of a popular jubilation and the demonstration is a success growing during the following decades. June 21st was selected because it generally coincides with the Solstice of summer (thus also one of the longest days of the year). Let us recall that the summer do not fall inevitably on June 21st, but it is nevertheless the case the majority of the years in the Northern Hemisphere. In France for example, the date will remain stable until 2020 (then 3 years out of 4). Coincidence with the summer thus symbolizes the sacring of the Nature through this festive day, with the image of the pagan festivals dedicated to nature or the harvests during the Antiquité (festivals of the Saint Jean).

It has the role to promote the music in two ways. Under the homophonous slogan with its name, made music , it encourages the musicians amateurs to occur voluntarily in the streets. Thanks to the organization of many free concerts, amateurs but also of professionals, it makes it possible a large audience to reach musics of all kinds and origins (Classical music, Jazz, Rock, World music, traditional Musique, etc).

The music being a universal vector of communication, this festival today was completely internationalized: in less than 15 years, it was diffused in 110 countries out of the 5 continents.
