Museum of the fine arts of Ontario

The Musée of the fine arts of Ontario (in English Art Gallery off Ontario , AGO ) is a museum of painting located in the center of Toronto, capital of the Ontario (Canada). It is the eighth museum of North America by the size (45 000 m ²).

The collections include/understand more than 66.000 works which cover one period active of the 1st century at our days. Works of Canadian artists constitute more half of the collections. The museum also has works of famous European artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin, Vincent Van Gogh, and Edgar Degas. The museum shelters also one of the most important collections of African Art in North America, as well as a collection of Contemporary art which illustrates the evolution of the modern artistic movements in Canada, the United States and in Europe, including works of Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Jenny Holzer. Finally the museum lodges the Henry Moore Sculpture Centers , which has the largest collection of works of this British sculptor .

History

The Museum of the fine arts of Ontario was founded in 1900 by a group of individuals, as “a Museum of art of Toronto” ( Art Museum off Toronto ). It was famous “Museum of the fine arts of Toronto” in 1919 and “Museum of the fine arts of Ontario” in 1966.
