Museum of the armoured tanks of Saumur

The museum of the armoured tanks of Saumur or museum of the armoured tanks General-Estienne is a museum of armored vehicles located at Saumur.

Inaugurated in 1977 in the old hangars of closed Beaufort, the museum moves in 1993 with the nº 1043 of the road of Fontevraud, in buildings given to nine by the ministry for Defense of a surface of: 22000 m ² in order to gather the collections then disseminated with Fontevraud, Bourges, Mans and elsewhere.

The museum accommodates: 45000 visitors per annum.

The museum was famous in museum of the armoured tanks General-Estienne in homage to the general Jean-Baptiste Eugene Estienne, the creator of the French armor-plated weapon.

Collections

This museum contains one of the largest collections of tanks in the world with that of Kubinka in Russia.

More than 800 machines are presented to the public, therefore 200 in operating condition. Around the museum, one can see a park of armoured tanks in a state of wreck awaiting their restoration.

One finds there almost the totality of the armoured vehicles of the French Army of 1917 to our days, of the Schneider CA1 with the Leclerc.

The material of the Second world war is well represented, with a large collection of German tanks thus a single specimen of Bengal tiger of 70 tons, but also of the others billégérants (American, English, Italian, etc…) time.

A hall is devoted to the armoured tanks of the ex- Warsaw Pact of the T-34 to the T-72, whereas another hall presents contemporary tanks of years 70-90 of the German armies: Leopard 1 and Leopard 2, American of the M26 to the M60, English: Centurion and Chieftain, Brazilian: Cascavel, Canadian, Swiss and Israeli: Merkava.

Lastly, a space models of more than 600 dioramas presents armoured tanks in situation.
