Collections

The museum of the Land shows a large range of collections sets of themes. The collections of this museum are regarded as most important of the kind in the Rhineland-Palatinat. With more than 2.000 original works, the museum preserves also a unit very representative of monuments of Roman antiquity. It is classified thus in the forefront of the Roman concise museums of Germany and the north of the Alps. Certain monuments are very known, in their kind, such as for example the large column of Jupiter. The collection of graphic works comprises Aquarelle S, Dessin S and prints as well as medieval miniatures.

The glassmakings Art nouveau are worthy to be mentioned thus that the Porcelaine S of Höchst of the old porcelain factory of the Prince-Voter. For the art of the 20th century, it is necessary to mention the most important whole of works of Antoni Tàpies of Germany.

Prehistory and Roman Antiquity

Mogontiacum, the capital of the higher Germanic, was a city Gallo-Roman important and prosperous which left many vestiges which were discovered with the wire of the centuries at the time of building sites or within the framework of systematic excavations. Large the Jupiter column

The Large Jupiter column á Mainz, measuring more than nine meters in height, shows well how the ancient buildings can make the account of last in an alive way. The inscription with the column base reveals an agitated chapter of the Roman history, at the time of the emperor Néron. One deciphers vaguely the words “Nero “and “pro salute “, which together mean “in the honor of Néron “. A copy of this column is in Paris (Where).

The column, broken in addition to 2000 pieces, was discovered in 1905, with the courses of building work near a district of antique dealers. This district was also on the territory of the current Neustadt district of Mainz. The tradesmen mayençais set up the column in the honor of the emperor. However it is only the fruit of the chance, so today one can draw this conclusion from it. Because after its death, Néron, identified like the author of the fire of Rome, was regarded and treated as a public enemy. The inscription with the Jupiter column base to Mainz could not thus remain there. Consequently one made it disappear - but not sufficiently to tell the truth.

On the column one can also decipher perfectly the coexistence of the worship of the Roman Gods and that of the Germanic gods. 28 reliefs show Roman divinities and Celtes. Fortuna, Minerve, Mercury and Salus, Héraclès, Apollo and the Dioscures. In the beginning, a statue of Jupiter out of bronze crowned the column. However there does not remain any more this statue but one foot, a little finger as well as pieces of the flash.

The arc of Dativius Victor

The city council man Dativius Victor of the town of Honeycomb (called today Frankfurt-Heddersheim) had made gift of a arc, which bears its name today, and of a gallery of honor.

Near the Roman-Germanic central Musée (Castle of the Prince-Voters) is held a copy of the made arch the year 1962, and the original is exposed to the museum of the Land. On the plank of the signs of the Zodiaque decorate the arch. In the center the couple of sovereigns of the gods of the sky, Jupiter and Junon. Whereas the German tribes threatened Mogontiacum more and more, one set up in the middle of the 4th century of new ramparts, for which existing buildings such as the sanctuaries or the cemeteries were used, in order to save time. Of this manner of the blocks of stone coming from the arc from Dativius Victor were used as foundations for the ramparts. From 1898 to 1911, the pieces of origin were unearthed and gathered.
