Museum of the Art schools of Nimes
The Musée of the Art schools of Nimes is since 1907, in a building designed by the architect max Raphel, located in the Public garden of the Mandrake, street of the Foulc City to Nimes. It was founded in 1821 and was then sheltered in famous the square Maison.
History
The museum, founded in 1821 in Maison Carrée, then shelters especially Roman and ancient works like some contemporary and older paintings. Space becoming too exiguous, an architectural contest is organized in 1902 for the realization of a new museum. It is the architect max Raphel who gains it. Work begins in 1903 to be completed in 1907. It has had for summer renovated by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte in 1987
Collections
The original collection is gathered as of 1824, from the private collections come then to enrich it, like the legacy of Robert Gower, in 1869, or that of Charles Tur in 1948 and those of artists and art lovers.The collection counts some 3600 works today. In the lower gallery, made up of three rooms, one can admire Italian paintings of Jacopo Bassano (1515-1592), Lelio Orsi (1511-1587), Andrea della Robbia (1435-1525) inter alia. In the seven rooms of the higher gallery, works of the Flemish and Dutch painters of XVIe and XVIIe centuries are exposed, Rubens, Carel Fabritius, Pierre Coeke (1502-1550); and those of the French painters Jean-François de Troy, Pierre Subleyras, Xavier Sigalon, Paul Delaroche, Charles-Joseph Natoire.
