Museum of the Acropolis of Athens

The museum of the Acropolis of Athens (Greece) is a Greek archaeological museum. It shelters exclusively the sculptures (low-reliefs, sculptor…) coming from the monuments from the Acropolis and excavations carried out since the 19th century on the site: ceramics is preserved at the archaeological National museum of Athens while the Inscription S were transported to the Musée epigraphic of Athens.

It is intended to currently be replaced in the short run (perhaps as of 2007) by the Nouveau Museum of the Acropolis in construction on the southern slopes of the Acropolis: initially, this new museum was to be ready for the Olympic Games of 2004 and its construction was one of the major arguments advanced by the Greek authorities to claim the restitution of the sculptures of the Parthenon held by the British Museum, but the firmness of this last institution and a controversy on the new museum delayed work considerably.

The current museum is a building built between 1865 and 1874 by the architect Panages Kalkos. In the Years 1950, it was increased and its collections reorganized by the I.  archeologist; Meliadès.

The collections of the museum include:

  • Of the sculptures of the antiquated Acropolis:

    • carved Offerings,
    • Pediments of temples,
    • Riding antiquated;
  • Of the sculptures of the Acropolis at the time traditional:
    • Sculptures of the style known as “severe”,
    • elements remained in Athens of the plank of the Parthenon,
    • the plank of the Érechthéion,
    • the plank and parapets of the temple of Athéna Nike,
    • Caryatids.
