Museum of art of the county of Los Angeles

The Los Angeles County Museum off Art ( LACMA ) is the museum of official art of the Comté of Los Angeles, in the state of California. It is located on the Wilshire Boulevard, along Museum Row, in the district of Miracle Mile, with Los Angeles.

History

The museum of art of the county of Los Angeles was founded in 1910. It formed part in the beginning of the Museum of Sciences, the History and Art in the zone of Exposition Park, close to the the University of California of the South, before becoming an independent institution devoted to art in 1961. The museum moved in its current buildings in 1965, in the sector of Brea Tar Pits. In 1991 the museum bought the adjacent building, having belonged to May Department Stores, which gave him 30% of additional space. This zone is called LACMA West.

A new wing, designed by the architect Renzo Piano, will be inaugurated in 2008 under the name of Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM). It was financed with the assistance of Eli Broad.

Since June 2006, the LACMA is directed by Michael Govan.

Collections

The LACMA presents more than 250.000 works, distributed in ten houses dedicated to one of the following fields:

It presents films, energy of the traditional dumb men with foreign contemporary films. The museum includes/understands one of the largest collections of Latin-American art thanks to the generous donation of more than 2.000 works of art by Bernard Lewin and his wife Edith Lewin in 1996.
