Museum of Vuk and Dositej
The Museum of Vuk and Dositej (in Serb Cyrillic Serb ВуковиДоситејевмузеј and in transliterated Vukov I Dositejev muzej) is a Musée of Belgrade, the capital of the Serbia. Created in 1949, it presents the life, the work and the heritage of Vuk Stefanović Karadžić (1787-1864), the large reformer of the Serb Langue, and Dositej Obradović (1742-1811), a writer who was also the Prime Minister for the education of the country. In 1979, this institution was attached to the National museum of Belgrade. The Museum of Vuk and Dositej is capital to include/understand the rebirth of the Serb Culture at the time of the first revolt against the Turks.
Presentation
Created in 1949, the Museum of Vuk and Dositej is located in the building of Balkan Style of old the High School, founded in 1808 by Dositej Obradović whereas he was Ministre for education; Karadžić was one of the first students of this establishment. Thereafter, this High School became the Université of Belgrade.
Vuk Stefanović Karadžić is evoked on the 1st floor. The funds of the museum was gathered by his/her daughter Mina Vukomanović. It comprises objects having belonged to the writer, as well as various documents transferred from the Serb Académie from sciences and arts (diplomas, calling cards, notes, receipts…).
The ground floor is devoted to Dositej Obradović. The museum prossède the library of the writer, as well as a great number of manuscripts.
