Museum of Tessé
Presentation
The Museum of Tessé is the principal museum of the city of the Mans. This building is an old episcopal palate, frame between 1871 and 1877. He proposes many guided visits on various topics and is located within a privileged natural framework, not far from the Quinconces of the Jacobins. In addition to an important Egyptian collection it contains a reconstitution of the residences of eternity of Nefertari and Sennefer in its arranged basement. This building at summer builds on the ground of the old field of Maupertuis.
History
The idea to create a museum in the city appears as of the end of the reign of Louis XVI, right before the revolution. That is concretized since 1892 since the revolutionary seizures of goods of the clergy in particular are carried out according to the decree of 1989. The private collections are confiscated at various points of the city, like area of Maine. The abbey Vincent Saint or the Église of the Seam within Mans is plundered. In 1822, the museum is municipalisé by the city of the Mans. In 1846, the museum is under pressure of the French company of archeology. The latter wants to see the museum of Mans having an archaeological branch worthy of this name. The frêres Hucher decide on its installation in the basements of the municipal theater, opposite the Cathédrale. In 1927, the Musée of the Art schools is transferred in old the évêché certificated one. It is the acteul principal building of the Museum. It was created in 1848, then destroyed following a fire. Its rebuilding lasted 6 years between 1872 and 1876. It is then closed down by the law of 1906. The residence was offered to the city by the Maréchal of Tessé. In 1949, the Museum of Tessé opens with the public. The alteration work will last until 1963. Thereafter, other installation will be carried out, in particular at the end of the years 1980.
