Museum of Grenoble
The museum of Grenoble is the museum of the Art schools, modern art and contemporary and Egyptology of the town of Grenoble in Isere.
History
The museum was founded in 1796 starting from the revolutionary seizures and of the sendings of the State. It was located initially in the old College of the Jésuites, currently Lycée Stendhal.From 1876, he moves in a building places of Verdun, the Museum-Library, called thus because he also shelters the public library. Its architect is Charles-Auguste Questel.
The museum is established since 1994 in a new building in edge of Isere.
It is supplemented, since 1988, of a park of sculptures (Park Albert Michallon), a raised space of 16.000 m going until the remainders of one of the enclosing walls of the city.
Two conservatives marked the history of the museum: Louis-Joseph Jay (1755-1836), who worked with the museum of 1796 to 1815 and which ensured its installation; Andry-Farcy, conservative of 1919 to 1949, who constituted the collection of modern art of the museum.
Structure
The current building was designed by the architects Olivier Felix-Faure of the Groupe 6 , Antoine Felix-Faure and Philippe Macary assisted Lorenzo Piqueras. The rooms are served by a central alley, and have an indirect lighting thanks to canopies. This building incorporates via an air footbridge the Tower of Isle, medieval fortification which is used as place of exposure of the drawings, and the remainders of the ramparts. The architectural project also integrated in the same complex the Stade El Salvador-Allende. On the first floor, an auditorium of 275 places is in which, Musée association in music organizes concerts in partnership with the Musée of Louvre.
Collections
The permanent collections (1 500 works in 65 rooms out of 18.000 m) gather:
Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities
Two rooms are devoted to Egyptian antiquities, with in particular of very beautiful sarcophagi. A room is devoted to Roman antiquities, and one with Greek antiquities.
Old art
This prestigious section is devoted to the Frenchwomen, Flemish, Dutch Spanish and Italian of 13th at the 19th centuries. One can quote in particular:- Holy Jerome of Georges of the Tower

- Holy Lucie allotted to Jacopo Torriti
- Holy Gregoire pope surrounded by saints and holy of Rubens

- Christ meeting the woman and wire of Zébédée and Noli me tangere of Véronèse
Regional art
It is the most local section, with paintings of the school from the Dauphine (Laurent Guétal, Jean Achard, Charles Bertier,…), of Ernest Hébert, the Abbot Holds. Many of these paintings represent landscapes from the Dauphine
19th century
The XIXe century is illustrated by a remarkable unit energy of the neo-classicism with Paul Gauguin, with works of Gustave Doré, Henri Fantin-Latour and Felix Vallotton ( Nude woman sitting in an armchair , 1897).
20th century
The section of the 20th siècleest particularly rich, with the conquests of the modern art until the formal developments most recent. Part of the collection comes from the leg Agutte - Sembat, with paintings of Matisse, Derain, Rouault, Signac, Vlaminck and Van Dongen. Matisse made gift of sound Intérieur to the eggplants and Picasso of its Femme reading in 1921.Great names of surrealism are present (Magritte, Joan Miró, max Ernst, Picabia).
The museum of Grenoble is a reference for the contemporary art, with works of Soulages, Christian Boltanski ( Monument ), Christo, Tapies, Warhol, Jean Dubuffet, Annette Messager and Rebecca Horn.
