Museum of Évêché of Limoges

The museum of Évêché is the municipal museum of the town of Limoges (High-Vienna), installed in the old episcopal palate of the 18th century, in the old historical quarters of the City.

Short presentation

The building is located at the foot of the cathedral, out of granite, the horseshoe shape, is accompanied by 2 houses of entry and an orangery. The close vault preserved the essence of its interior decoration of 18th and 19th centuries.

Founded in 1912, the museum accommodates various collections related to the history and the culture of Limoges. One sees there as a majority of the traditional enamels, approximately 500 parts, which illustrate the production of the local workshops since the 12th century. medieval sculptures are also presented, collections archaeological coming from the excavations of the Gallo-Roman site, an Egyptological section, paintings (Auguste Renoir, Suzanne Valadon, Armand Guillaumin of the school of Crozant…). It accommodates (: 70000 visitors per annum) and is thus one of the most visited museums area.

A botanical garden borders the museum, overhanging the Vienna.

Archaeological excavations

During work, excavations were organized by the Inrap, in two sections, one in spring 2004, the second at the winter 2006 - 2007. These excavations put at the day of important vestiges of very diverse times (of IIe at the XVIIIe centuries). This archaeological building site thus allowed the distinction of ten principal phases of occupation of the site, distributed over these sixteen centuries of history. One in particular found a furnace ancient, ancient thermal baths heated by Hypocauste, of the medieval cellars.
