It was inaugurated with Madrid in 1992, and baptized in the honor of Sophie of Greece, the current queen of Spain, marries Juan-Carlos I {{er}}.
History
The central building of the museum was old the Hôpital of San Carlos , built under the direction of Jose de Hermosilla and then of Francesco Sabatini, at the end of the 18th century. As from 1980, one made restorations to open the museum since 1988 in the form of temporary exhibitions. This year there, a decree declared it national museum. The French architect Jean Nouvel carried out an extension inaugurated in 2005, which increased the surface of the museum of approximately 27.000 square meters.It is an autonomous organization depend on the Ministry for the Culture. It is in the zone of Atocha (close to the station of the same name). It is one of the tops of Gold the Triangle of Art (other tops of the triangle being occupied by the Musée of Prado and the Musée Thyssen-Bornemisza)

Among Spanish works, the museum lodges excellent collections of Pablo Picasso (whose Guernica celebrates it), El Salvador Dalí (like Large Masturbateur ), Juan Gris, Joan Miró, Julio González, Eduardo Chillida, Pablo Palazuelo, Antoni Tàpies, Miquel Barceló, Pablo Gargallo, Lucio Muñoz, Luis Gordillo, Jorge Oteiza, Ouka Lele and Jose Luis Gutiérrez Solana.
