Samuel Bernard , count de Coubert (1725), is a French financier born with Sancerre in 1651 and died the January 18th 1739.

Of Dutch origin, Samuel Bernard was the son of the painter and engraver Samuel-Jacques Bernard (1615-1687). Its family was Protestant, but his/her father, according to the memories apocryphal books of the Marquise of Créquy, “ had kissed the sect of Arminius had been constrained with expatrier ”.

He created the French Compagnie of Guinea. Qualified by Saint-Simon of “most famous and the richest banker of Europe”, it lent important funds to the kingdom under the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV.

Louis XIV, with end of resources, in particular must have recourse to him in 1708 to finance the War of succession of Spain. Samuel Bernard was anobli in 1699 per Louis XIV and created “count de Coubert” by Louis XV in 1725. December 29th 1719, it had indeed acquired of the ground of Coubert (Seine-et-Marne) with its castle, which it made rebuild of 1724 with 1727, perhaps by Germain Boffrand. It also made build in Paris a splendid hotel 46 Rue of the Vat. In 1731, it acquired of the ground of Glisolles in Normandy.

Samuel Bernard was married first once with Magdelaine Clergeau, then it remaria in 1720 with Miss of Saint-Shamans, sister of one of his daughters-in-law. He had as children:

  • Samuel-Jacques Bernard (1686 - 1753), count de Coubert (1739), which was superintendent of finances, fields and businesses of the queen (1725) (of the first bed);

  • Gabriel Bernard de Rieux (1687 - 1745), which married the girl of the count de Boulainvilliers, president of the second Room of the Investigations to the Parlement of Paris (of the first bed);
  • Vincent Bernard of Livinière;
  • Good Happiness Bernard (of the second bed), which married Mathieu-François Molé, president with mortar at the Parliament of Paris.

It also had three natural girls born from Marie-Anne-Armande Carton, said Manon, girl of the actor Florent Carton Dancourt, and woman of Jean-Louis-Guillaume Fontaine (1666 - 1714), police chief and controller of the navy and the wars at the department of Flandres and Picardy:

  • Louise-Marie-Madeleine Fountain (1706 - 1799), which married the farmer general Claude Dupin, owner of the Château of Chenonceau;
  • Marie Anne Louise Fountain (1710 - 1765), which married Antoine Alexis Panneau of Arty, managing director of the assistances of 1737 with 1743;
  • François Therese Fountain (1712 - 1765), which married Mr. Vallet of the Key.
